First, you have to try a bunch of scents from different notes. It may sound very vague, but it isn't. Try to buy an edp or edt in floral, fresh, sweet, musky notes, etc. One thing that few people tell you is that not everyone is suited to a particular scent.If I'm suitably musky, it doesn't mean you will be too. The same as the longevity of scent from certain perfumes, it depends on someone's body whether they swear a lot or not, or how their sweat smells with the perfume.
Next is to buy the perfume in small packaging. There are a few sizes you can try. Buy it in 30ml increments first, then in decant, miniature, or vial sizes.All of them have the same exact smell as the bigger bottle does. You don't have to worry, though. My personal advice is to aim for miniature or vial size. That's easier.
What I'd do is buy a few edp vials from various brands and make notes. Floral, sweet, musky, spicy, woody, and critusy are all present.From here, I discovered that my body didn't cooperate well with sweet and fresh notes. After a while wearing them, I started to smell weird, and it didn't complement my body's fragrance. The same goes for citrus notes, but it really depends on what other notes are in the perfume. The scents that work best for me are vanilla, coconut, floral and musky. Indeed, I already have a few favourite perfumes that last forever on me.
Next, of course, you have to do it one at a time. Finding your own signature scent can be quite stressful if you're impatient. Take your time and try out the perfumes one at a time. Give it a try for a few days to confirm the scent, whether it suits you, and whether it lasts long. It took me months to know what scent complemented me the best.
